There are other tools for text analysis. With wc you can get the number
of lines in a file or the number of entries filtered by previous
commands. Like
cat *.ad? |wc
Which gives you immediately the total number of lines in your ada files

Really? But there are some 1000000 different Windows programs and each
of them has 1000 options, so you have to remember 1000000*2**1000
variants :-)
If you don't need command line tools, you don't have to use them,
but don't call them bad design just because you don't need them.
