Actually after thinking about it I agree with you.
Though the connections are long lived (on the order of
several hours) that doesn't really remove the
usefulness of a thread pool, it just makes it less
valuable. It makes it less valuable because context
switching takes up a much smaller percentage of
overall run time. Even in this case a thread pool is
still a good idea.
