You can run a number of the ARM boards off a 7805 powered by a PP3 battery.
Try doing that with a x86 based board.
They are also cheap, very small in size, and have various I/O options
including (usually) plenty of GPIO pins.

Olimex are very popular with hobbyists here in Europe and they produce a
large range of boards including, but not restricted to, ARM.

Why ? For a number of projects, running Linux would be serious overkill
and, on a technical level, would not be suitable if you have hard real
time requirements (although there are various RT extensions which might
be suitable in some circumstances).
GNAT is running on ARM under RTEMS. I don't know what the current bare
metal status is for ARM, although people have posted in the past in
c.l.a about work they have done on this.
