Sun has backed Java.

Before that, Microsoft backed Visual Basic.

Before that, IBM backed PL/I.

In each case, if the language prevailed it would boost the fortunes
of its major backer.

Ada is too standardized to provide a major competitive advantage to
a compiler vendor who also happens to sell operating systems.
