I have done this with GNU C, but was disappointed to find that GNU C++
suppressed unreferenced static strings.

Also, there is a potential problem with headers (well, I guess all you
have to do is put the $Id$ inside the
  #ifndef _this_file_has_been_read_already_
 thing).
