That's not entirely accurate. Not even speaking of EMS or XMS, first there
was the HMA, which added almost 64K (anyone remember A20?), then the big
real (aka. unreal) mode was "invented". 32-Bit addressing required, but
you could access the full 4 GB under native DOS. Good ol' times where I
still knew every single interrupt or port address and it's purpose. ;)
