course, this was the same compiler that defined a "GLOBAL vars" 
statement... Which effectively translated:

        global x, y, m, n, a

into

        common /x/ x
        common /y/ y
        common /m/ m
        common /n/ n
        common /a/ a

IE, /each/ variable named generated a named common block containing 
only that variable, and the common block name matched the variable name.
