 I think  "pick up the shipping" is a colloquialism for paying the price of 
postage and packaging. You can ask to see the postal regulations at any 
post office.

some options are:

a) Cash On Delivery (COD) in many administrations. When the parcel is 
delivered to the address, the postman must be paid in cash the amount 
specified on the packaging.

b) Prepayment. Send the cash in an exchangeable currency or send a money 
telegram, or send International Reply Coupons (IRCs) which can be 
purchased at any post office. Under Universal Postal Union (UPU) 
regulations (it's a specialised agency of the United Nations) IRCs must 
be made available for purchase by the public. You may have to pay more 
than the exchange value of them however.

I take it Ian Kerr was supposed to be following up to
Michael Meng's <myan518@sina.com> post.

Another way of sending the money would be by an International
Banker's Draft or an International Money Order etc. Ask your
local bank or other financial institution (I do not know if Chinese
post offices deal with money but some European ones do) for
which way they would recommend you to pay (there may be other
ways aside from Ian's suggestions and my one). I doubt that
payment on delivery such as Cash On Delivery would be feasible.

Further to Ian's statements of International Reply Coupons (IRCs),
I thought that the only sort available are for giving the minimum
Worldwide airmail postage for an ordinary letter. So for example
this might be U.S.$1.28 but the book may need $30 of postage to
the U.S.A.. So that would be expensive (to get a single IRC
might cost about $1.60 in China -- but then international transfers
would probably have excessive surcharges anyway).

international service of the U.S. postal system, see

I also might not mind having a cheap copy of

plain dearer than buying it from a shop. Maybe not.

That's great! I'd like to read them. 
Unfortunatly, I'm in China, I don't know how to "pick up the shipping".

That's really too kind.  _Where_ exactly are you?  UK, USA?  We could use
a couple of copies here in _Portugal_.  How much would the shipping
be?  Thanks a lot.

Doh! (now an official word BTW).

I just ordered it from Abe Books for 24.98! Had I not ordered I'm sure
some law in the universe would have been broken.
