Whatever you choose needs to be something which can be scale invariant
from a size of a few cm up to around a metre or so without looking naff
or unrecognisable at either end of the scale.
Not only does it need to be cute as some others have said, it also needs
to invoke a sense of fun.
It also helps if you choose something which can easily be turned into a
stuffed toy. Google for something like "linux penguin stuffed toy"
(without the quotes) if you want to see why.
