GNAT GPL 2017 X86-64 GNU Linux (64 bits)

I installed the above on both a new Ubuntu and Redhat release. Building
from the command line and EMACS Ada mode all work. But try as I might, I
cannot get GPS to work properly. Every project loaded, including the
tutorial, shows a "?" icon before all source files rather than the
triangle. This is even with default VCS set to "None" and no VCS in the
project file. I've also tried opening, editing, and saving the files to
no effect.
Is there some trick to installing GPS?
GPS would be very helpful on my project if it would work the way the
tutorial indicates.

Does your installation of GPL seem to work apart from the "?" icons?

I tried running GPS GPL 2017 and I see the "?" icons too, but everything else seems to work fine.

I can't check anything that requires the triangle. Step 6 in the
tutorial doesn't work.  Code-completion (tutorial 8) doesn't work
either. Documentation seems to work. Browser seems to work.

I found (macOS, git) that when I look in Project view, any files that
have an open window have a green tick or an orange spot, and the others
have ?'s. When I double-click on a file to open it, the ? changes to
tick or spot as appropriate.

In the VCS Explorer window, only those files that have ever been opened
show a tick or a (blue) spot; others, '?'.

I'm a bit surprised it's this way, I have to say. Git doesn't take that
long to get the statuses.

I get either ? or orange spot. I never get the triangle that the
tutorial requires. Also other features don't work, but I haven'
cataloged them thinking that fixing the ? might fix them too.

and GPS should not either. I have done most of the work on this new git
integration, but then left the company so I am not sure whether anything
has changed.
I discovered one issue with the Branches view, there's an exception
raised in some cases. I have submitted a patch, but AdaCore hasn't
integrated it yet.

You could try integrating the patch from https://github.com/AdaCore/gps/pull/17
(purely on the python sources) and see whether things work better.
Otherwise you should definitely report this as an issue (in github I think)

Can you list the features of GPS that are not in Emacs Ada mode that you like? I'm always open to suggestions for improving Ada mode.
