I found (macOS, git) that when I look in Project view, any files that
have an open window have a green tick or an orange spot, and the others
have ?'s. When I double-click on a file to open it, the ? changes to
tick or spot as appropriate.

In the VCS Explorer window, only those files that have ever been opened
show a tick or a (blue) spot; others, '?'.

I'm a bit surprised it's this way, I have to say. Git doesn't take that
long to get the statuses.
