Well, read Abelson and Sussman's classic book "Structure
and Interpretation of Computer Programs". What you are
looking for is called "streams".
Common Lisp has a library called "series" which
does these things and is able to compile it
to efficient code. For a description
of "Series" see "Common Lisp the Language, 2nd Edition"
by Guy L. Steele Jr.:

This stuff is a decade old now.
Another thing worth looking for is the STL for C++.
