The last debugger I used regularly (mostly for FORTRAN-77) was the one
provided by VMS; where pretty much operation relied upon it being a global
exception handler (watching variables implemented by setting the memory
page read-only, catching the attempt to write, displaying the activity, set
page to RW, update, reset to RO)...
