domain? If so, a clear statement to this effect should be placed on the
material in question (this means of course that someonhe else is free to
modify your work and copyright it themselves -- in this situation, even you
will not have the right to copy this modified work).

I always assume an unmarked document is copyrighted by its author, and
that it should be treated accordingly. It is a good idea to put (c) xxx
on a document to claim the copyright, but it is not required, and the
necessary chain of copyright custody can still be established (though
with more difficulty).

In this case your email message, if it is possible to clearly
authenticate it, might well damage a copyright claim irretrievably,
so it is indeed probably safe for anyone to copy the material, but
it is really helpful if every document posted on the internet has
a very clear IPR statement.
