Many of you have noted that WUARCHIVE supports NFS mounts, and I have
received several queries about it. Here is the general response, with
the new disk drive next week factored in.

This is really an outstanding capability for users! You can mount the
archive as a logical disk from the point of your Internet-based system
and access it as a read-only disk partition. Of course, you may find
that it is a SLOW disk due to the Internet overhead, but still ... enjoy!

A mailing list has been created for the purpose of notifying interested
parties of changes in operational status of wuarchive (i.e. downtime,
major additions to the archives, etc.). Sites which NFS mount the
archives are strongly urged to subscribe to this list and it is open to
any other individuals who are interested.

For information on how to subscribe to the wuarchive-announce mailing
list, fetch a copy of the file info/README.MAILING-LIST and read it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some example /etc/fstab entries. The first one is for Ultrix,
which should be compatible with any 4.2BSD system and the second is for
4.3BSD UNIX. Similar things are needed for other systems, but it is not
feasible to exhaustively enumerate them -- you're on your own. Note that
you must mount ALL of the listed partitions to have full access to the
archives since they are split over multiple disk drives.

4.2BSD and Ultrix:

 /archive@wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive:ro:0:0:nfs:bg,soft,intr,noexec:
 /archive/usenet@wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/usenet:ro:0:0:nfs:bg,soft,intr,no
exec:
 /archive/systems@wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/systems:ro:0:0:nfs:bg,soft,intr,
noexec:
 /archive/mirrors@wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors:ro:0:0:nfs:bg,soft,intr,
noexec:
 /archive/mirrors2@wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors2:ro:0:0:nfs:bg,soft,int
r,noexec:
 /archive/mirrors3@wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors3:ro:0:0:nfs:bg,soft,int
r,noexec:
 /archive/mirrors4@wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors4:ro:0:0:nfs:bg,soft,int
r,noexec:

4.3BSD:

  wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive /archive nfs ro,noquota,soft,i
ntr,bg,noexec 0 0
  wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/usenet /archive/usenet nfs ro,noquota,soft,i
ntr,bg,noexec 0 0
  wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/systems /archive/systems nfs ro,noquota,soft,i
ntr,bg,noexec 0 0
  wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors /archive/mirrors nfs ro,noquota,soft,i
ntr,bg,noexec 0 0
  wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors2 /archive/mirrors2 nfs ro,noquota,soft,i
ntr,bg,noexec 0 0
  wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors3 /archive/mirrors3 nfs ro,noquota,soft,i
ntr,bg,noexec 0 0
  wuarchive.wustl.edu:/archive/mirrors4 /archive/mirrors4 nfs ro,noquota,soft,i
ntr,bg,noexec 0 0

Note that not all systems support the noexec option, so you may need to
remove it from the mount options above.

Please feel free to mount the archive partitions at any time.
Wuarchive is up and running and ready to service your every request...
If you do mount the archive partitions, PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE
SOFT MOUNTED.
