I suspect this might be related to a change that Ubuntu made relative
to the original Debian. Debian uses i486-linux-gnu, Ubuntu changed
that to i686-linux-gnu.  Of course, without detailed symptoms or
access to an Ubuntu system, I cannot tell for sure.
