I have downloaded and installed gps-1.4.0.academic-x86-windows and
installed it onto my home desktop machine. When I start gps.exe, I
first get a dialog "created config directory c:\.gps", then the splash
screen splashes.

And that's the end of it. There it sits until I salute ctrl-alt-del.

This machine is running Windows 98, and there is a gtkada-1.3.12/bin
on my path. And the gps does seem to have lots of good stuff,
including documentation that does not address this issue - so I
hypothesize it is correctly installed.

I also performed an install on my laptop, which runs Window XP, and
GPS starts up much more normally (subject to a more thorough
inspection).

So should I expect to have trouble running under '98? Or is there
some step have missed?

Thx
John

If I remember correctly, GPS does not support Windows 98.

Nope that's Windows 98 that does not support GPS :)

What about Windows XP? I have Windows XP SP1 and a quite recent
version of GTK, and GPS seems to hang during startup. Any ideas?

Hm..This should work..One thing is that GPS installs its own Gtk libraries
but perhaps there is some sort of
conflict between the Gtk libraries you already have and the ones GPS
installs.

That one made me laught Pascal. I must really hate microsoft cause I got
GPS working fine on my Windows 98...;-).....Maybe I should email them and
let them know that? :-)

The version before GPS 1.4.0 didn't work and gave me that exact problem he
describes here....but when I got 1.4.0 downloaded it installed
perfectly....I didn't have any Gtk installed though so maybe that's the only
issue...

Haha, that's a good one. A few years ago I would usually turn my
sentences that way, but I got labelled a primitive and emotional
Microsoft hater. When I fact I'm a sophisticated and open-minded
Microsoft hater :)

Well note that this was a joke and only a joke, I'm not a Microsoft hater.
There is lot of good things on Windows. But that's another issue :)

Well just to add to my previous message, when I say Windows I'm talking about
Windows 2000/XP other versions can't be called OS :)

Here is the O.P. returning to close the content of this thread:

I replaced the operating system with Windows XP, and now GPS installs
and works fine. At least as near as I can tell -- I'm just starting.

Thanks for the constructive suggestions, all. And I'll refrain from
offering my opinions about Microsoft product qualities....

John
