Phillips Laboratory at Kirtland AFB base is awarding a contract to
have developed a reusable realtime operating system of a spacecraft. The
contractor will do studies of existing materials and COTS stuff to see
what additional is needed. The system will include a 32-bit radiation
hardened microprocessor and be standardized in terms of services,
application interfaces, and Ada run-time interfaces to increase the hardware
independence and software portability. The Air Force expects to award a
one-year contract for $200,000 with an option for two additional years
worth upto $1 million.
For more contractual and RFP-type information, call Lynne Adams at
505-846-5935, extension 136. This project was announced in the June 9
Commerce Business Daily. On July 25th, they will be releasing another
solicitation for reusable software architecture for spacecraft. Again,
contact Lynne Adams. One of the technical people at Kirtland involved
with these efforts is Christine Anderson, who I suppose can be contacted
to get the technical perspective on these projects.
Kirtland helps run the satellite control systems for DoD satellites.
Presently the systems are manually operated. Christine and her colleagues
are trying to automate a lot of these systems, and I guess plan to use
these projects as a basis to do so. If they are successful, it would make
great material to use to publicize Ada efforts. I know of a half dozen
widely read publications that a success story could get into to give Ada
a lot of exposure. In fact, I hope that in the RFP there is one requirement
to publicize their efforts as part of the contract.
Anyways contact Kirtland if you want more information. And for those
bidding on the reusable spacecraft software architecture project, I have
the largest collection of spacecraft software (> 3000 programs) that would
be ideal for doing domain analysis on. Contact me if you have questions.

I'd appreciate it if anyone reading this USENET message, and was
unaware of these RFPs before reading this, to email me a message saying
UNAWARE. For those aware of these RFPs, email me a message saying AWARE.
A lot of people throughout the Ada industry read comp.lang.ada, and it
amazes me how little use is made of comp.lang.ada to broadcast Ada RFPs.
Many of us who have Internet access but can't afford to subscribe to the
Commerce Business Daily would benefit from such announcements, as well as
the DoD benefitting by having its RFPs exposed to more companies.
