The Pentagon's choice of standard financial systems has sparked a
House probe and triggered a request that the Defense Department
spend no more on these systems.
Rep. John Murtha, chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee
on Defense, has asked the full committee's investigations staff to
determine the validity of DoD's choice of the standard systems.
"It has come to my attention that a number of recent decisions have
been made by acting personnel before your confirmation that deeply
concern this committee and may be an inordinate waste of taxpayer's
money", Murtha wrote last month to Defense Secretary Les Aspin.

Industry sources and senior Army officials agreed that the termination
of one of the Pentagon's most successful Ada programs sparked the
Murtha investigation. Last fall, the Pentagon scrapped STANFINS for
a big COBOL program.
