Federal Computer Week
Navy XML policy signed
BY Matthew French
Dec. 18, 2002
Navy chief information officer David Wennergren has signed the Navy's
Extensible Markup Language policy, setting the standard for how XML will be
used within the service. XML facilitates information exchange among
applications and systems because it enables agencies to tag data and
documents.

The URL is http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2002/1216/web-xml-12-18-02.asp
Hopefully, DoD will be able to enforce this one and Ada will power it.

It looks like a policy on how to use XML when it is used, not a mandate
on *when* it must be used.

One would think they've learned their lesson by now about mandating
languages. (OK, I know I'm being foolish there, but still...)

That is a common shortage in several organizations: you define a way to do something and assume it implicitely also defines the
mandate to use.

If your company accuires 10 copies of the Ada Reference Manual it does not mean that every programmer in the company from now on is
obliged to use Ada and only Ada.

I passed the URI on to someone else who in return,
gave me a copy of the DoD XML policy. 175 pages!
