The 4GB memory space comes from the 2**32 address space on VAX.

Since then they have ported to Alpha, and the current page table
arrangement does not particularly limit virtual memory to be any
smaller than the amount of paging space you can fit on a disk.
But I do not believe Compaq offers any disks with 2**64 bytes
of space.  I don't believe they even offer any machines that
could hold that much disk space in total, even if you could
afford it.
