I do not understand your problem. GNAT is a command-line compiler that -on
Win98- can work with two IDE's: Emacs or AdaGide. Size & position of Emacs
can be controlled by adding startup parameters, AdaGide can be moved &
enlarged, up to full screen size the usual way.

Your question is hard for me to understand. What do you mean by "the
compiler's window is never where I want it to be"? What kind of window
would be big and convenient for you to enter a "long code"?

I'm guessing that you are really talking about the AdaGIDE editor that comes
with GNAT. Positioning the window where you want it should just be a matter of
clicking on the bar and dragging it. You can also grab one of the corners and
enlarge the window to as large as you like.
Note that GNAT does not depend on AdaGIDE. You can use any text editor (e.g.
Notepad) you like as long as it will produce a simple ASCII text file. Then you
open an MS-DOS window and invoke the compiler from the command line.

GNAT is a good choice for the beginner because it is readily available for the
cost of a download and can be run quite simply from the command line. Aonix has
a good product, but in my experience it is more complex to set up and use.

ObjectAda "Special Edition" is also available for the cost of a download at www.aonix.com, and supports a command line mode. It's also
directly compatible with other tools on Windows, and has an MSVC-like IDE.
