this does not belong in all the newsgroups it has stupidly been posted to.
if the "documents and software" had been freely accessible to all the
people who receive this marketing nonsense, I would not have objected, but
when you abuse the network goodwill to push your products, I sure hope
nobody out there will consider calling you except to yell unpleasant things
at the dweeb who decided to post this. as is typical with such things,
however, there is no named person to hold responsible for this nonsense,
further indicating that they _know_ they are guilty.

You spoke too soon, Erik. ASSET is a free resource. It's just what
happens when the US government runs a software repository -- they
want to be able to "Carefully" track all access to the system, so
they require you to fetch everything after logging in with an
authorized account. So, I guess you could say the US government is
guilty :-)
(I'm sure if I've misspoke, somebody from ASSET will correct me).

The one _correct_ part of your post! :-)

strong words backfire forcefully.
I have learned that ASSET's material is available free of charge, but that
they want tight control over access to it (or something), and "you need to
have an account with ASSET", "acquiring an account" and "our holdings" did
not, as I was certain it did, imply commercial operation. (I still think
those terms quite strongly convey commercial operation, though.)
may I suggest a rewording to more specifically provide the conditions for
getting an account? also, a name of a real person is always very helpful.
I'm not sure all the newsgroups that receive this have equal use for it,
though. in the past half-dozen "catalog listings", I have not found much
material specifically useful to comp.text.sgml, anyway.
apologies to ASSET. I'm sure they do a good job.

Just a quick FYI:
STARS stands for "Software Technology for Adaptable, Reliable Systems"
and is a DARPA (i.e., your tax dollars at work) sponsored program. The
objective of the STARS program is to increase software productivity,
reliability and quality by creating a software engineering enviornment
(both tools and processes) that promote and facilitate software reuse.
The STARS program is a leader in research and development in the area
of megaprogramming and software reuse.
I missed the original post but I don't see any mention of "products"
in the STARS clip. Further, the original post should be of general
interest to developers and software engineers. I think Eric's flame
is misdirected and I hope people _do_ check out what is available in
the STARS ASSET catalog.
By the by, I am in no way affiliated with the STARS program. I am
just familiar with some of their work.

Considering that Erik is from Norway, I don't think that STARS can be
accused of spending HIS tax dollars....
Let's not assume that everyone involved with software, Ada, etc. is a
U.S. taxpayer...
