Of course people do this, ask anyone whose suffered doing customer
support over the 'phone.  Wherever possible, using a fax is much
quicker and less error prone.

   ... but the idea is that our memory seems more closely tied to what
   we hear and verbalize, not what we see ...

Sounds rather contentious to me.
