My thinking on it goes like this: Use any term you like so long as you a)
define what you mean by it and b) use it consistently. HAL is fine with me -
if it means you're going to code a bunch of small routines that isolate how
things work on a specific processor to make it easier to port, that's a
legitimate goal. Sounds like it differs to some extent from a device
driver - although the goals of portability are similar.
