Seems I heard that theory in "The Hitchikers Guide To The Galaxy" wherein
the Cirrus Cybernetics Corporation covered up their fundamental design flaws
with superficial design flaws. One expended so much energy trying to get a
CCC product to work at all, that one didn't notice that what it did was
totally useless.

I doubt that long-term it is an answer for a company. It didn't work for
Detroit when Japan decided to invade the US market with cars that didn't
break down at every turn. "Quality" suddenly got to be extremely important
to the Detroit auto makers.
