Fortran is almost certainly not as popular as, say, C++ or Java currently
are. However, I've seen *lots* of Fortran in use in various scientific,
engineering and simulation work. A lot of the reasons for its popularity are
legacy systems and legacy programmers. While I agree that there are numerous
developers who won't know Fortran or use Fortran or believe that Fortran has
assumed room temperature, I'd venture a guess that it is still entrenched in
more places than Ada is.
So I wouldn't be surprised that a Fortran compiler is enjoying good sales
without a presence on store shelves. I'd also believe that some Ada
compilers are enjoying "good" sales - with the meaning of "good" being
rather relative to the size of the companies and their expectations -
without a presence on store shelves. The question is, how much better would
sales be if there *were* a presence on store shelves where impulse buyers
with no prior Ada experience might pick it up?
