gnatgdb from rpm gnat-3.13p-4 (x86 Mandrake Linux v7.2) thinks it's
looking for C files and won't play nice with Ada. Is there a working
version of this out there anyplace?

Is it the correct gdb executable you are using?
Some dist. packages require adjusting pathes for
gdb/Ada vs. gdb/C.
