Of course it does buffering (RTFM). That's not the issue!
The issue is that if you do a call for byte by byte, there
is a lot of computational overhead. For example, this means
you have to check for each byte written whether the file is
currently open in the appropriate mode.

If you think "oh well, surely it will be buffered, so I won't
find it that inefficient", you are operating in the dark :-)
