He hasn't said anything about thinking he'll do better; just that he's doing something similar.  One of the things about building off of the work of others is that sometimes you miss out on the deep understanding -- another is that something that's "ok"/"good-enough" can stall out research in a particular area for a generation (this happened with PROLOG and the WAM).
