Questions about the upcoming DoD sponsored Software Technology
Strategy Open Forum may be addressed to Ms. Donna Graham, (703)
845-6616, graham@ida.org.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Department of Defense (DoD) is sponsoring an open forum from
Tuesday, 31 March 1992, through Thursday, 2 April 1992, at the Ramada
Hotel-Tysons Corner, VA. The purpose of this forum is to obtain
public comment on the draft DoD Software Technology Strategy (SWTS)
dated December 1991. This draft, developed through the collaborative
efforts of numerous offices and organizations within the DoD and under
the auspices of the Director of Defense Research and Engineering
(DDR&E), is an integral part of the DDR&E Software Action Plan (SWAP)
and the DoD Science and Technology Thrust Area covering Technology for
Affordability.

The purpose of the SWTS is twofold: (1) to assess DoD software
technology needs and (2) to define and justify coordinated DoD science
and technology actions and investments that meet the assessed needs.
The scope of the Strategy covers the 15-year period of DoD software
technology investments from fiscal year (FY)1992 to FY2007. Plans
for the first five years are provided in more detail. The Strategy
addresses six specific software technology areas: software and systems
engineering, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence,
software for parallel and heterogeneous distributed systems,
real-time/fault-tolerant software, and high assurance software.

The forum will consist of a general session in which DoD personnel
will summarize the key components of the Strategy; smaller, parallel breakout
sessions for detailed discussion and comment on the six technology areas; and a
closing general session to report on the results of the breakout
group sessions.

All interested parties are invited to attend; however, because of
space limitations, attendance will be limited to the first 500
registrants. There will be a nominal fee associated with the public
forum to help defray the cost. To obtain a copy of the SWTS and
registration information, please contact Ms. Donna Graham, DoD
