But the civilan stuff is even more frightening with regards to obsolescence.
They frequently do things that requires you to rewrite parts of your software.
The cost is just as horrific and more often.

E.g. powerbuilder, Oracle forms.

I would not like to pay <insert vendor here> to maintain their C++ compiler for
30+ years because some project is using it. In fact, I'm pretty certain that I
would have a hard time getting the vendor to understand the issues and keep
that compiler supported.

If I were into long life projects I would want Ada. I would know that there is
an industry that understands the issues of long life cycles, safety critical
software, etc. To me that means safety and assurance.
