I disagree with this. Part of performance of software
is maintainability, and part of maintainability is
about readability, and well chosen coding standards,
and in particular consistent adherence to such
standards definitely promotes readability.
Coding standards are also important in encouraging
egoless programming in a team, where everyone owns
all the code. That's must easier in practice if the
code is in a common style.
