I picked up a copy of COTS Journal at the Embedded Systems Conference
last week and it had an interesting article on a company (producing
video monitoring and security systems) that switched from C to Ada and
reaped the rewards. Their data showed not only that their Ada code
(which took no longer to write, BTW) had fewer errors (1 per 270 SLOC,
vs. 1 per 80 SLOC for C), but that the average bug fix took only 1/12
(!) as long (20 minutes vs. 4 hours). These two figures work out to a
40-fold (!) improvement in bug fixing time/cost. This is certainly an
attention-getting figure, much more so than the lower error rate
alone. Seems like the Ada debug time / SLOC advantage is something
that should be touted more (recognizing of course that other projects
will have different, but presumably not all -that- different, results).

Which issue and/or title of article?

Based on the description I suspect it is the same story that is here:

There is one COTS magazine at http://www.rtcgroup.com/cotsjournal/

The latest issue there is may/june.

If you try http://www.cotsjournal.com/ you end up at
http://mae.pennnet.com/home/home.cfm

The green hills site is perhaps the source of the article.

Greetings,

The issue is July/August 2000, and the article title is "Ada 95
Accelerates Time to Market". The product is the same one described in
the story referred to below, but the article text is not the same.

BTW, this morning my Embedded Systems Programming issue showed up with
a cover tag proclaiming "Ada: Nuts to C++". The article itself,
titled "From OOP to Nuts" discusses Ada OOP in embedded systems and
suggests "maybe the problem isn't OOP, but C++". It is a response to
an earlier "Nuts to OOP!" article.

I just noticed the graphic above the article! For those who don't get
the magazine (which, BTW, fully reflects the heavy C/C++ useage in
embedded work), it shows on one side a proper little girl sitting in a
fancy chair, with a star above her head and "ADA" (sic) written across
her, while on the other side a goofy-looking boy sits on a stool with a
dunce cap and "C++" written across him. Makes me think they'd be
receptive to more Ada articles...

That would be the Embedded Systems Programming article I'm referring
to. I found the text, but not the graphic :( at:
http://www.embedded.com/2000/0010/0010feat2.htm

In fact, the "cover" article about measuring has a few "in passing"
remarks
about C++ deficiencies and Ada advantages. When I thanked the editor,
Michael Barr for not pretending Ada doesn't exist (like some mags), he
said he is trying to get the mag more balanced with regard to Ada, and
"expect more Ada articles in Y2K+1"
