I have decided that I love Windows. It just saved my butt.

Our project has a requirement to work within %50 of our hardware's CPU
and Memory capacities. I also have a requirement to continuously keep a
copy of the last 10 minutes of the run for possible replay. But we only
had enough memory to save about 4.5 minutes. I was looking at having to
write some kind of custom real-time compression algorithm, but we were
*also* butting up against our CPU limit, even with full optimization. I
designed things the best I could, but it would be *my* fault and *my*
problem to fix if things didn't fit. Talk about a no-win situation.

Microsoft to the rescue! It turns out that our Windows2K based operator
station (which uses the same hardware) was running so slowly that they
decidied they needed to upgrade everything to PIII systems with twice
the computing power and 4 times the memory. I'm saved!

I think that I'm going to have to have to go buy a copy of WindowsME
this evening, just to show Bill my appreciation. Yea, Microsoft!

Of course I'm suggesting all sorts of new ActiveX 3D features for the
operator station designers to slip in, just to be on the safe side. :-)
