NOTE: these directions apply to those folks who are driving to the david
lawrence convention center (as opposed to taking the shuttle busses) AND who
are staying at hotels to the west of Pittsburgh (since the hotels are all
very close to I-279). Those folks who are driving and staying at hotels to
the EAST of pittsburgh should get directions from their respective hotels.
The David L. Lawrence Convention Center is located at the corner of Penn
Avenue and Tenth Street in Pittsburgh. The street address is 1001 Penn
Avenue.
The four lane roadway leading from the airport to the city of Pittsburgh is
called the Parkway West (it becomes Interstate 279). From the Airport main
terminal, turn right (east) and look for signs "To Pittsburgh". Continue
following signs "To Pittsburgh" for approximately 12 miles until you reach
the Fort Pitt Tunnels. After going through the tunnels, you will emerge on
the Fort Pitt Bridge. There are two routes you can follow from the bridge:
1). Follow the signs for "Convention Center and/or Strip
District" while on the bridge (you should merge to the
left lanes on the bridge). Keep following signs for the
convention center -- note: this is pretty easy, but
be careful cause there are a lot
of interstate ramps to follow. Eventually you will come
out on Fort Duquesne Blvd.
Follow Fort Duquesne Blvd east until you reach Tenth Street.
(there is a light) Make a
right-hand turn (south) on Tenth Street and the entrance
to the Convention Center Garage will be on your left in
the middle of the block.
2). Follow the signs for "Liberty Avenue and/or Downtown"
while on the bridge (you should stay in the middle lane).
Follow Liberty Avenue east away from the bridge and make a
left-hand turn (north) on Tenth Street. The Vista
International Hotel is at the corner of Liberty Avenue and
Tenth Street. The Convention Center is 1 block north of the
Vista International Hotel. The entrance to the Convention
Center Garage will be on your right in the middle of the
block (go past the entrance to the convention center).
* Parking *
Parking is available at:
the Convention Center (its own garage -- about 500 spaces)
the Vista Hotel (may be limited as there is a convention there, also)
Greyhound Bus Station
lots on Tenth Street, Penn Avenue, Smallman Street and Etna Street.
The cost to park all day ranges from $3 - $7. If you wish
to park indoors at the Vista, Convention Center, Greyhound Bus Station
ARRIVE EARLY!!!.
If all the indoor parking is full, there are several open lots closeby on
Tenth Street, Penn Avenue, Smallman Street and Etna Street. (see small
inset map below).
* TRAFFIC *
Traffic conditions along the Parkway West are usually HEAVY from the hours
of 7 am - 9:30 am. Delays of up to 30 minutes can be expected before
entering the Fort Pitt Tunnels. So leave your hotels early!! Radio stations
KQV 1410 AM, KDKA 1020 AM, and WTAE 1250 AM report on traffic conditions
regularly during the morning rush hour.
Here's a map, X's generally mark parking lots. the lots bordering ETNA are
rather large!!
