Hi,

Not a request for anything, except information. I had a little thing to
do, which I wanted to do with Ada, preferably with the new Ada 2012
iterator interface, to practice with it, but GNAT 4.6, which is the one
coming with Ubuntu Precise does not support it. So I would like to know if
I would better wait more or less to later start with the Ada 2012
iterators, or if I would better not wait at all and start without it (I
though the GNAT coming with Precise, to which I recently switched, was
fully Ada 2012). That's why I would like to know about any known date. If
it's near enough to me, I will wait, otherwise, I will resume without it.

Have a nice time

I recommend you not wait for gnat-4.7 or gnat-4.8, sorry. Also if you
want to minimize the waiting, switch to Debian unstable because gnat-4.7
will appear there first.

I've started work on gnat-4.7 but it will be some time before it is in a
state where I can upload to unstable. How much time, I cannot tell as I
do all of this in my spare time. Even then it is possible that I decide
that gnat-4.8 will be the next default compiler in Debian 8 "Jessie".
I'll make that decision around March 2013, after GCC 4.8 is released.

Are there any plans to include GnatColl?

Thanks...

Yes but no manpower (yet) to execute the plans. See
http://bugs.debian.org/640532

Feel free to start work on this from the GPS 5.0 sources, later to be
ported to a more recent version; contact me in case of need.

This may be heretical, but you can install GNAT GPL 2012 on Ubuntu.

Do you know if there will be any GNAT 4.8 On Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) in any
future? Seems to stay with GCC 4.6 so far, not even GCC 4.7. I know I can
install a GCC 4.8 snapshot (what I did, and it works fine), but it's not
OK as a build dependency of a source package I guess, and I'm planning to
have a test publishing a tiny simple application, the core in Ada 2012 and
the UI in Vala. The publication process requires a source package, and I
don't want to use GNAT specific features with a GNAT 4.6 which does not
properly handles Ada 2012 (ex. Static_Predicate is not recognized, nor
some part of the Ada 2012 iteration features).

Note I'm not begging for anything, just seeking for what I can expect and
can't expect in the future. If I can't expect a GNAT 4.8 before the next
LTS, I won't mind, and will just fall-back to Ada 2005.

Fedora has GNAT 4.7.2 20121109

4.6.x has severe bugs in controlled types with stream attributes defined
causing the compiler to hang. Those look fixed in 4.7.x.

No. I don't know anything about the choices that Ubuntu makes.

I don't think you can expect an old Ubuntu version get newer
packages. But maybe you wonder about next LTS.

> Seems to stay with GCC 4.6 so far, not even GCC 4.7.

There was no GNAT 4.7 in Debian unstable when 12.04 was frozen so 12.04
got no 4.7. I suppose you'll have to wait until 13.10 to see any of
them. In Ubuntu Ada packages are community packages and they pick what
Debian unstable got at some point. So if you would like to predict the
progress of any Ada packages in Ubuntu you would have to look at
progress in Debian and add up to a half year (or more if you are looking
for LTS).

That's what I do too.

Not trying to be offencive in any way, but when are you counting on
getting your code stable enough for packaging? Personally I expect the
packaging of 4.8 to go faster then my coding so I've got no concerns
regarding when it will be available.

LTS comes out with YY.04 version iirc [*]. Could we guess 14.04 to be
next LTS? Maybe you could keep an eye on the version in Debian unstable,
test it in a chroot/vm/lxc and give feedback (to Ludovic) using mailing
list/open bugs... That way you will increace the chances for Ubuntu
picking a version you have already tested.

[*] I went upstream to Debian during last year so I'm not following
Ubuntu very much.
