System.Default_Bit_Order has nothing whatsoever to do with
byte ordering, and changing it does not affect byte ordering.
This is a common misconception. Of course usually bit order
and byte order should be the same or you get into trouble
(this means incidentally that if you change it from the
default, you are definitely likely to get into trouble :-)

As to whether it is reasonable to assume 8, obviously this is
not true of all machines, e.g. I assume it is 32 on the SHARC,
and it is 24 on the original Intermetrics validation.

But for most normal machines it will be 8.
