CVS is good, and physically it scales, but it takes a lot of work to make
CVS fit into your culture. It is adapted for Unix/C environments, and it
leaves much to be desired/written. A build environment would be nice, and
don't even try to say "make".

Look at the Vista 2 project at SRC. There are many interesting ideas there,
some of which have been incorporated into commercial applications.

---

As far as the rest of this thread is concerned, I think that Jim Snead asked
a good question, which is "why does anyone use this expensive product", and
questions like that need to be asked. But it is not the business of this
group to convince Jim that he should use Apex. That is Rational's job. And
the people who use Apex either have questioned whether they should or have
not.

There are open-source considerations that are as good for as many
applications as commercial packages are, and there are as many applications
that open-source tools don't support as commercial packages do not. Some
people/companies prefer the commercial applications. It works for them, the
answer was given.

In my opinion, it seems that there must be a subtle symbiosis in the parts
of Apex that make it better for some than for others, and it seems that it
has a following that dates back before the product got its name.

There is an obvious following for CVS and GNAT. I personally hate working
with and configuring unix-style compilers, but as long as those are the free
ones, its what I'm stuck with. But just because something can be done with
two different tools, it doesn't mean it gets done the same way.
