Its getting so you can't tell the players without a scorecard! ;-) I seem to
recall many years ago they were early Ada adopters for something called
"Advanced Artillery Tactical Field Data System" - or something pretty much like
that. I didn't know that the company had changed hands. I'd be curious about
what projects are still being done there in Ada.

Weather? We're in the midst of the Hot&Humid Season, to be followed by the
changing colors of the license plates, indicating the start of Tourist Season.
Its a great place for Ada Software Engineers to live. Now if I can only get
Magnavox/Hughes/Raytheon to decide to let me telecommute, we might have a deal
for this "Exceptional Opportunity" :-)

I'd be inclined to agree. Anyone with a sufficient background in software engineering ought to be
able to learn Ada and become competent in it in less time than this position seems to have been
open. Possibly, they need someone who would fit into a "key designer" role where long term
experience in Ada would be much less easily replaced.

Or maybe the money is laughable? Or there are really dozens of jobs behind this offer and they
have not filled them all? Lots of speculation is possible.

It's called AFATDS (Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System) -- still
going, and I'd bet that's the project with the opportunity.

Presumably Ada was chosen because it is not limited to
31-character identifiers :-).

Actually it's Raytheon now. We just had a guy leave here to go there.

Ft. Wayne, IN? That's got to be Magnavox. I've been to Indiana & I think
Florida is a bit warmer - at least in winter. My idea of an "excellent relo
package" is if they will relocate the company to West Palm Beach. (I could get
them a dozen or so top notch Ada programmers if they did!) Or maybe they'll
let me telecommute? :-)

Although I am not looking for a job, and I have nothing against Ft. Wayne,
this particular opening has been posted enough that I think it the sort of
case where one should take a programmer who wants the Midwest and teach
them Ada. Or "software engineer" if you prefer, but I am not the sort
to give great weight to job titles.

That won't do much good if you want someone who is experienced with Ada.

What used to be Magnavox became part of Hughes Aircraft, several years ago,
and in late 1997, the defense portion of Hughes became part of Raytheon.

Which reminds me of an Ada class I was teaching at a Navy base. We
came to the subject of access types. As I began to discuss dynamic
allocation, one of the civilian employees of the Navy in the back of
the room raised his hand and asked, "Richard, does this mean we are
going to be up to our access types in allocators?"

Don't forget the coral snakes, and fire-ants, and encephalitis-carrying
mosquitoes, and the feral pigs...

And of course this time of year, Floridians are mowing their lawns twice
a week.

Look up "alligator" in the AARM's index.

Oh, we have quite a few gators out here in the front yard of Pratt's
engineering building, but as long as you don't try to feed them or pet
them, they're content to soak in the sun and go for a swim from time to
time. Pretty much the same way I am when the weekend comes around.

Darn, it's the wrong Ft. W.

Anyone hiring Ada SW engineers in the Fort _Worth_ or Dallas area?

I just had a friend and co-worker accept an offer in Ft. Worth from Motorola,
but the job was not specifically in Ada. Granted, one would prefer to stay
with the language of choice, but if geography is more important, you might
consider giving them a call. I hear they still have positions. (It is, after
all, in the expanding field of telecomm. I'm wondering why the telecomm gang
doesn't give Ada a more serious look since they have such a high reliability
requirement. Sell a bazillion cell phones with a software bug and see what the
recall would do to the general ledger! :-)

Make the cell phone that is software upgradeable and
that you can install new features into and you will double
your bazillion cell phone sales. Have it done over the
air waves and not have to bring the phone into a delear
and your sales would double again. Now that would do the
ledger some good.

Sure. But that's a product strategy. One that would have to be evaluated
against the cost of adding the required hardware, etc. But just because a
product is upgradable doesn't mean that you can't have a bug which requires a
recall. If the software that does the loading has a bug, you can obviously
break the device in the load process and incur some warranty cost.

I am reminded of an HP programmable calculator which allowed the user to put
in a sequence of commands to be executed at power-up. A friend of mine had
one and thought one day "Gee. I wonder what would happen if I put the 'off'
instruction into the power-up sequence?" The answer to that question was:
"You get to send your calculator back to Hewlet Packard to have them reset
the EEPROMs so you can once again turn on your calculator." HP was apparently
quite familiar with the problem so there must have been more than a few
people who thought to try this out. Now granted, this is not exactly a
"software error" but it shows how a design flaw can lead to higher than
expected warranty costs.

I don't remember the exact details, but I remember hearing a story where
Pitney Bowes built a postage meter which turned out to have a software error
that caused a recall. The recall was so extensive that it very nearly drove
them into bankruptcy. Caveat Emptor - or more properly, it's opposite: "Let
the seller beware!" (Whatever that turns out to be in Latin. ;-)

Well, that's a possibility, but I'm not giving up on Ada (to go over to
the dark side) yet.

To borrow a quote from your (MDC's) web pages:

Everyone, I assume, knows the story of the "halt and catch fire"
instruction in the Heath 19. You could set the horizontal sweep
frequency to zero. Putting DC through the flyback transformer let out
all the magic blue smoke. Not many know of a similar problem in the IBM
7094. This was a $2 million dollar computer back in the early sixties
that had a word of addressable core memory inside the CPU. These "sense
registers" were setable from the front panel, and provided a neat
power-up feature. You loaded a transfer instruction to the bootstrap
routine in the sense registers, and when the machine was started it read
the sense registers as an instruction, and away you went. (For you
young'ens, core memory retains data forever if the power is off, unlike
RAM.)

What if you put a "Halt and transfer" instruction in the sense
registers?
No problem, reset the sense registers using the front panel and hit
start. (Incidently, so far everything applies as well to the earlier
7090.) In a 7090, indirection took an extra cycle. The computer would
halt, read the address from the instruction, and then do the
indirection. But, in the 7094, there was one slight difference. The
7094 was faster both in clock speed and in the number of clock cycles
used for some operations. (Anyone familiar with digital design will
understand that they triggered on both the rise and fall of the clock,
and the halt occured at the fall.) The halt occurred after reading the
address but before loading it into a register. So if you halted the
machine and changed the sense registers, the first thing that happened
after the halt was the write back of the data location read in the
indirection. (Core memory like DRAM, must be rewritten after reading.)
Next the completion of the indirection loaded the new address into the
address register and transferred there. Oops! No matter what you did,
executing an "HTR* *" instruction in the sense registers converted the
machine into so much dead weight until the IBM service engineers showed
up and erased the sense registers with a degausser or replaced the
board. (An HTR* * was not quite as deadly in main memory, since there
was a pull switch with a cover on the control panel to erase main
memory.)

Of course there was a very early enginnering fix applied to fix
this, so you had to have a low number machine to have ever run into it.
MIT had two, one for Project MAC.

Or you could look at it as being sent out as a missionary among the heathens. Sure,
there are "official" jobs which are going to be mandated from on high to be in
language XYZ (for a variety of good and bad reasons) but there are always sideline
projects in which you can pretty much do what you like. Getting Ada into the
sideline projects provides a means of getting it into the corporate culture - sort
of victory by infiltration. I'm looking at the probability that I will be moving to
a job that will be done in something non-Ada, but I believe I will still find
opportunities to employ it.

I think the song was "One More Minute" and there was a lyric about paper cuts and
lemon juice, as I recall. And something like: "I'd rather clean all the urinals in
Grand Central Station with my tongue, than spend one more minute with you."
