The Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE)is holding an eighth
Vacation School on "Safety Critical Systems" from 5 - 8 September 1999

It has been organised by Professional Group A1(Software systems
engineering) and will be held at the Moller Centre, Cambridge.

The field of safety critical systems includes all those processes,
products and services where a breakdown or design fault might lead to
death, injury or damage to property.

The School will provide participants with a firm grounding in the theory
and practice of modern techniques for defining and managing the risk
potential of computer-based systems. In future it is likely to become
increasingly difficult for a company that has not employed such
techniques to argue that it has exercised proper legal care for the
safety of its products and services.

The structure of the lectures will be based on the "safety lifecycle"
from the International Standard IEC 61508. Separate lectures will cover
various phases of the safety lifecycle. A key objective of the School
will be to provide participants with an understanding of the
International Standard IEC 61508. This standard is generically based
and will form the basis of many application sector international
standards. Therefore, an understanding of IEC 61508 will provide
participants with a sound basis for dealing with the requirements of
their industry sector. The management of safety as well as some of the
issues relating to human factors will also be addressed.

Lectures will be given by speakers from industrial, academic and
regulatory organisations - several of whom have been intimately involved
with the development of 61508. The School will benefit engineers who
are approaching safety-related systems for the first time; who will be
taking project management responsibility and wish to ensure they are
aware of recent developments in this field, and those who may have an
understanding in specific areas of safety-related system technology but
who wish to widen their knowledge base.
