Dear all,

Many of you here may know Jacob Sparre Andersen.

I'm very sad to inform you that after a short but aggressive illness,
Jacob died yesterday...

He was a frequent contributor to comp.lang.ada and various other
Ada-related forums. Over the past decade, he presented and helped
at FOSDEM's Ada Developer Rooms, at Ada-Europe conferences, and many
other events. Since several years he was News Editor for Ada-Europe's
Ada User Journal.

I will remember Jacob as a kind and very helpful guy, always ready
to step in to help, and to explain issues important to him.

He will be sorely missed...

Dirk

I had the privilege of working with him on and off the last couple of years.
He was a consultant at my work, at our danish office.

He had ideas - some crazy, but some very good.
And he was always kind and cheerful.

He will be very missed.

I have been asked to announce to this group that Jacob Sparre Andersen has passed away from stomach cancer on Sunday 16th of December 2018.

Jacob was admitted to hospital only a month ago, and despite his diagnosis, he retained his usual jolly and helpful self until the very end.

We hope that the many communities Jacob enriched will help preserve memories of Jacob, for his daughter Lea to find and treasure when she grows up.

The service will be held in Hørsholm Kirke, Denmark, on Saturday the 22th 13:00.

On behalf of Jacobs friends and family,

Poul-Henning Kamp

So sad. He helped me personally by letting me use his news server for
posting to comp.lang.ada rather than having to pay some substantial amount
to get this one feed.

In related news, I presume that I will be disappearing from here soon as I
don't have a viable alternative way to access the newsfeed. I don't want to
use Google Groups as it tends (like all websites) to trash code (making
messages hard to read and write), and because I'd have to disable most of
the anti-tracking programs on my browser to use it.

It's been fun and educational. - Randy.

There are free usenet servers, I'll post the one I use on my mobile.

That would be sad.

I use eternal-september.org - see also aioe.org (which Dmitry uses, I
think)

I also use nntp.aioe.org. It's free and works fine for reading and
writing (as you can see from this message ;-)

Hi Randy

Don't go. Why don't you use a private tab with your browser. Your code won't format the way you want but you could still provide guidance to people and keep up with current events

Whilst I did not know Jacob, I am truly sorry about this.

I do recognize the name; he's one of the people I've seen on this community during my past year on and off on Ada. Chances are I've learned something from some of his posts. I likely have.

Maybe it would be a good idea to download Jacob's work and continue it. I am guessing that is what he would have wanted

I used this command:

Very sad news indeed. I have had numerous lengthy conversations with him in person at Ada Europe conferences over the years. He will definitely be missed.

Jacob was a great friend and a very creative person.

He was passionate about Ada. Doing things correctly and neatly suited his temperament. He was the one who introduced me to Ada 24 years ago.

He channeled his efforts into not just Ada but also Lego, and had a most impressive collection of comic books.

Jacob leaves behind his widow and 7-year-old daughter. He had promised his daughter that we would hang on until her 8th birthday in a few weeks but Jacob did not even make it until Christmas.

Arrangements have been made to keep his web-sites running. He offered that I could change the text as needed but I declined "one doesn't just touch-up a Rembrandt either" to which he replied with a smiley saying he would take his afternoon nap.

Jacob will be sorely missed.
