Hi,

As you may already know, I'm the schmuck who's been whining about
lack of a gdb debugger for GNAT 3.09 (The Win95 version). It
seems that for some reason or other my distribution did not
install a debugger, so after considering it, I'm biting the
bullet and re-downloading the entire 9 megs (on a 14.4 modem
no less :().

However, eager as I am not to get bit again, I would like
your suggestions as to a tried and true site where you downloaded
the system and found that it worked fine, debugger and all.

While I'm at it, I intend to download TASH (The TK Ada Bindings)
and of course Tcl/Tk. Before I do, is there anything that I
should know (bugs, bad distributions, suggested distributions,
etc...)?

Thanks in advance for all the assistance and patience everyone
here has offered me, and I hope that this second attempt will
bear fruit.

Thanks.

Take that opportunity to download version 3.10p1.
<ftp://cs.nyu.edu//pub/gnat/winnt/> is the master site for public versions of
GNAT, you should always find everything there.

But isn't 3.10p1 a WinNT only version? I believe cs.nyu.edu was
where I downloaded 3.09, because the documentation stated
that it was the Win95 version. However if everything works on
Win95 from there (I've heard conflicting reports), I suppose
I can get that.

Also have you tried TASH on that? I've read that TASH was tested
on 3.09, so I don't know how it would work on 3.10.

Eagerly awaiting your response.

Thanks a ton also :)

ftp://ftp.cs.nyu.edu/pub/gnat/winnt contains the following:
-rw-r--r-- 1 4001 1100 1938521 Jan 9 00:03 gdb-3.10p-nt.exe
-r-xr-xr-x 1 4001 1100 11898808 Sep 19 21:01 gnat-3.10p1-nt.exe

They are the latest public releases for BOTH Win95 and NT.
You will need both to get the debugger.

GNAT 3.10 also comes with a Windows GUI front-end (AdaGIDE). The
latest version of that is at:

ftp://ftp.usafa.af.mil/pub/dfcs/carlisle/adagide/agide618.zip
-rw-r--r-- 1 1007 1000 2408359 Jan 21 14:59 agide618.zip

I have used TASH with 3.10 and it works fine.
I found it at:
http://wuarchive.wustl.edu/languages/ada/bindings/tash
tash761.zip 543,349 Sep 17 15:14

Version 800 is not yet available for Windows.

I highly recommend getting a copy of the Tcl/Tk interpreter as well. I got
mine on a CD with the book "Graphical Applications with Tcl & Tk 2nd ed",
Foster-Johnson. It is also available for download somewhere.

As you can see, this is a LOT of bytes to download. Walnut Creek puts
out an Ada CD-ROM roughly quarterly. Unfortunately, gdb-3.10p won't
be available until the next one, but this one has gnat-3.10p and TASH.

Hope this helps.

Nope. It should run on Win95 without problems. GDB did have a Win95
problem ....but recent release should avoid these problems,

Is anyone else having problems accessing this site? I get:

Fatal Error 500

Can't Access Document: ftp://ftp.cs.nyu.edu/pub/gnat/winnt.

Reason: FTP-server replies: Can't open passive connection: Permission
denied..

from Netscape 3. ( I have the GNAT compiler for NT but want to update
my version of GDB ).

Cheers,

Mark.

Netscape is one of the worst ftp clients I have ever used. Try another ftp
client and it will work fine.

I have subsequently discovered that the problem lies in the fact that
we have a firewall installed ( thanks for the info Roger ) which is
preventing this sort of connection. Ah, well...
