CFCSE: OPEN ARCHITECTURES FOR DIVERSE MISSIONS
Topic: DII, COE, Ada, Reuse

Joanne Arnette and Lt.Col. J.A. Hamilton, Jr. discuss the mission of the
DISA's Center for Computer Systems Engineering (CFCSE) in the November
1997 issue of Crosstalk. They assert that the CFCSE is striving for
software interoperability through open systems, and integration of
diverse systems requires open architectures.

DISA's efforts to achieve "jointness" involve creating a common operating
environment, common software applications, and a common programming
language. At a minimum, this common platform will support the Global
Command and Control System (GCCS) and the Global Combat Support System
(GCSS); it is also being designed to provide robust interfaces for future
additions to the system.

FIRST IEEE WORKSHOP ON APPLICATION-SPECIFIC SOFTWARE ENGINEERING AND
TECHNOLOGY (ASSET'98)
Topic: Software Engineering

March 26-28, 1998, University of Texas-Dallas, Richardson, TX

Co-sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society (pending) and by the Center for
Application-Specific Systems and Software Engineering (CASSE) at UT-Dallas.

The goal of ASSET '98 is to bring together researchers and practitioners
interested in all aspects of software engineering as it applies to
software development in telecommunications, real-time embedded systems
and business information systems. The workshop aims to improve the dialog
between industry and academia by providing a forum for state-of-the-art
research and practice.
