Sorry folks, it's been a long time since I posted my request for
information on vax/unix ada implementations. Here is the long-awaited
summary of responses. I don't want to argue over whatever qualitative
judgements I may be promulgating, so I have more or less bowdlerized
the messgaes.
These messages are kind of old; my apologies if they're not up to date.

Only one I know of, Liud, is the TeleSoft ADA. The one we have
running here is a subset (dirty word in DoD land), but I think
they have the full language version available now.

At this point in time, you have 2 choices:
For Sun's and Vax's running 4.2BSD (System 5 should be shortly):
Definitly Validated on Sun: Telesoft
Likely to Validate on Vax Soon: Telesoft, Verdix
Likely to Validate on Sun Soon: Verdix
Here are some stats for a Vax Ada compiler:
The Verdix compiler is very fast 1000/lpm and better! The Telesoft is a bit
slower and at about 300-400/lpm. The Verdix Ada compiler is written in 'C'
and the Telesoft Ada compiler is written in 'Pascal' (hence the speed
difference).
The people have been at Verdix have been very helpful in providing info even
though we are only evaluating characteristics.

try Intermetrics or SofTech, all in the Boston area. they have had
contracts to the Air Force and Army (respectively) for Ada compilers
for the VAX. Also try Tartan Labs in Pittsburgh and the University
of Karlsruhe in W. Germany. also try the Ada SIG newsletter from ACM.

At the last DECUS convention, VAX/ADA was announced and should be
available shortly (I assume). From the discussions, it appears to
meet this year's (or 84?) validation requirements. I don't recall if
it was validated or is in the process. It will be supported by the
new VMS version 4.0 language sensitive editor and (screen !!)
debugger.

This definately seems to be your personal opinion of the difference
between C and Pascal. Except for Berkeley Pascal, I have found Pascal
speed virtually identical to C. Telesoft Ada is written in Telesoft
Ada, and the reason it is slow is that Telesoft Ada uses pseudo-code.
This allows for portability and is why Telesoft Ada is available on
more machines than any other Ada. It also means you can have a
validated Ada on an IBM-pc (not a subset).

Could someone summarize for me where one can obtain Ada compilers for
Vax/Unix machines? Any other information you want to throw in would be
appreciated.
Reply by MAIL and I will summarize to the newsgroup.
