Tartan Introduces First Commercially Available Ada 9X
        Development Systems for Embedded Processors

Provides Smooth Transition to New Programming Language

Pittsburgh, PA, October 18, 1994 --- Tartan, Inc. introduces

version 5.1 of its Ada development systems which contain

support for several advanced Ada 9X features and include

significantly improved programming tools. Tartan's products

are the first production quality commercially available Ada

9X development systems for embedded processors. Tartan is

providing Ada 9X support in step with the national and

international standardization of this modern programming

language revision. A simple command-line switch allows Tartan

5.1 system users to begin to experiment with the features of

Ada 9X without disrupting existing Ada 83 code.

Tartan is making the announcement at the DSP World Expo at

the INFOmart Conference and Exhibition Center in Dallas,

        Texas on October 18th.

"The Ada language has traditionally been used for defense and

aerospace applications, and recently is also becoming popular

in the commercial marketplace," stated Lee Ehrlichman,

Tartan's President and CEO. "Large and complex commercial

applications require the high-speed performance and critical

safety factors that Ada provides. Now with the 9X revision,

there are additional capabilities that will make Ada even

more attractive to the commercial marketplace."

Tartan's Ada development systems apply to all segments of the

embedded real-time systems market, including aerospace and

defense, commercial avionics, digital signal processing,

medical instrumentation, process control and public

        transportation.

The Ada 9X features included in Tartan's Ada 5.1 systems

increase the flexibility of Ada while retaining its

reliability. One feature, protected types, provides an

efficient mechanism for multitask synchronized access to

shared data, a critical requirement for real-time systems.

Another Ada 9X feature is a hierarchical library structure

containing child packages and subprograms. Hierarchical child

packages allow extension and continued privacy of private

types without massive disruption of the system.

Also included in Tartan Ada 5.1 is a full 9X parser and some

support for real-time annex features, including priority

queuing. Software engineers can check existing Ada 83 code

for syntactic upward compatibility using the 9X parser.

"Tartan Ada 5.1 provides users with a solution that addresses

current and future needs, in one system," stated Wayne

Lieberman, General Manager of Tartan's Ada Business Unit.

"Software designers have the ability to work in Ada 83, the

language with which they are most familiar, and smoothly

transition to Ada 9X, the new language standard, at their own

        pace."

Additional 9X features will be incrementally added to

Tartan's Ada systems to provide a manageable path for

software designers to integrate the powerful new language

capabilities into their applications. Tartan will complete

the implementation of the core Ada 9X features long before

customers are required to transition to the new Ada standard.

In addition to the Ada 9X features, Tartan Ada 5.1 offers new
