HEWLETT-PACKARD OS COMPLIANT WITH COE 3.1

The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) has approved 
Hewlett-Packard Co.'s HP-UX operating system as compliant with the 
Defense Information Infrastructure (DII) Common Operating Environment 
(COE) Version 3.1.

Hewlett-Packard is the first vendor to achieve DII COE certification.  
As a registered OS, HP-UX 10.20 has been configured to support the DISA 
kernal, a predefined system-level administration program that sits atop 
the OS and interacts with application software.

TASK TERMINATION AND ADA 95
Topic: Ada

In the September/October 1997 issue of "Ada Letters," a bimonthly 
publication of SIGAda, the issue of Task Termination and Ada 95 is 
addressed.  The following is an abstract of the study:

Ada 83 removed from the programmer the burden of coding potentially 
complex termination conditions between clients and servers by introducing 
an 'or terminate' option to the select statement.  With the introduction 
of indirect communication, it is no longer straightforward to obtain 
program termination.  This paper illustrates the problem and suggests 
that adding a terminate alternative to an entry call might solve the 
problem.  The advantages and disadvantages of the approach are discussed.

USAF SEEKS TO ENHANCE GCCS SECURITY
Topic: DII

The Air Force's Rome Laboratory has awarded four contracts for research 
to enhance security features of the Global Command and Control System 
(GCCS).  Trusted Information Systems Inc., of Glenwood, MD, won two of 
the four contracts.  The contracts are for research into unified security 
management and administration for networks and distributed computer systems.

Secure Computing Corp. of Roseville, MN, was hired to develop security 
enhancements for existing commercial security products.  Open Group 
Research Institute of Cambridge, MA, will provide identity- and 
roles-based management of access control information for DOD users.

DMS DEMO MARKS NEW BEGINNING
Topic:  DII

For four days last month, the Army's project manager for the Defense 
Message System (DMS) demonstrated to dozens of visitors the future of 
military messaging once the Department of Defense (DOD) phases out the 
AUTODIN system.  The demonstration, held near DISA headquarters in 
Arlington, VA, showed how DMS would route Microsoft Exchange e-mail to a 
Lotus Notes client.

"My biggest mission right now is education," said Col. Robert C. 
Raiford.  "Too many people are tired of seeing briefings.  They're 
saying,'Show me that it works.'"
