FORTRAN is still an important language in computational science. There are
a number of reasons why:
1. Highly efficient optimizing compilers
2. Highly reliable compilers
3. Implementations for distributed environments
4. Well-implemented libraries
5. Software reuse, and
6. User community inertia
I use C++ where most of my colleagues use FORTRAN, but that's because most
of my work involves combined discrete event/continuous simulations, and I
find C++ easier to use for those.
