But there has been some work done on making gcc compile to a
machine-independent(?) bytecode, hasn't there?
There is some bytecode stuff in the gcc source code,
but from the looks of things, it isn't complete yet.

A gcc->bytecode compiler and a bytecode interpreter would suffice
for bootstrapping purposes,
