Software Engineering News Brief
Week Ending:  January 17, 1997

ADA 95 NOW AVAILABLE FOR POWER MAC
Topic:  Ada

Tenon Intersystems has extended MachTen -- its UNIX system for Apple
computers -- to include the GNAT-Ada 95 tool suite.

MachTen CodeBuilder, a new offering from Tenon demonstrated last week at
Macworld in San Francisco, includes Ada 95. CodeBuilder can be used in
combination with standard Macintosh editors and compilers to develop
Macintosh applications, X applications and UNIX applications.

MachTen CodeBuilder extends MacOS with a family of dynamically linked,
shared libraries that, like a Java virtual machine, create a UNIX virtual
machine-based execution environment with pre-emptive multi-tasking.
Tenon's MachTen UNIX is based on the same Carnegie Mellon Mach and
BSD UNIX foundation as Steve Jobs' NeXT OS, making CodeBuilder a good
platform for porting and building next-generation MacOS applications.

CodeBuilder supports a complete GNU software development environment.
The GNU Ada 95 compiler was brought to Power Macs by leveraging Tenon's
existing gcc development tool suite. The Ada 95 environment includes
up-to-date tools for object-oriented programming and the core Ada essential
tools suite from the Free Software Foundation. The Ada compiler includes
a tasking run-time environment, an interface to the MacOS threads
library, and Ada language bindings to the Macintosh Toolbox (API).

ADATEST 95 NOW AVAILABLE
Topic:  Ada

IPL are pleased to announce AdaTEST 95, available now, which is designed
to provide facilities equivalent to the test harness and analysis
components of AdaTEST Version 3.1 but for the new Ada standard. AdaTEST
95 was formally launched in North America at the Tri-Ada show at
Philadelphia in December.

The main new facilities are:

- support for new Character and String types, with new AdaTEST Checks;
- support for other new types including modular and tagged types, with new
  AdaTEST Generic Checks;
- improved support for exceptions, using exception choice parameters;
- support for timing analysis using the real-time timer from Annex D;
- support for testing of code executed during elaboration;
- support for coverage of all Ada 95 constructs including Protected Types
  and Asynchronous Selects;
- support for the "Masking MCDC" coverage metric;
- support for Boolean coverage on an expanded class of Boolean expressions;

AdaTEST 95 will initially provide Script Generation facilities for
Ada 83 code only.
